PLANNING: Katy Perry Audience Interviews
The following interviews are based on a questionnaire we produced on Survey Monkey. We asked our target audience a series of questions about what they would like to see in a music video, i.e. ritual celebrations.
PLANNING- Survey Monkey Katy Perry Audience Questionaire
1. What aspects of a music video do you usually look out for?
2. Who is your favourite music artist and why?
3. What do you hate to see in music videos and why?
4. How long do you think music videos should be?
5. Do you like to see controversial images in music videos?
6. Do you like there to be a story in a music video? (please specify)
PLANNING - Proposal
We plan to make a video for Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl".
This video will begin with a girl waking up in bed and trying to remember what happened the night before. She then experiences a flashback of the previous night. People begin arriving at the girl's house and then everyone is having a party with her friends where they are drinking alcohol, dancing, singing to music and generally having fun. The video then returns to the present where the girl turns and realises there is another girl in bed next to her. We then see her gasp with shock.
The video represents the artist as fun and girly, which will appeal to her fans which we have found are mostly young girls. The party aspect of the video will attract the audience because from conducting our research we found that many people enjoyed videos that featured ritual celebration such as parties.
We will edit the video using Adobe Premiere and include special effects so the audience is able to differentiate between the past and present.

PLANNING - Research into Websites - Lauren Wright
In order to know, what aspects to add to the website which will be popular and suit the artist, I conducted some research into websites that could possible inspire us with some ideas.
The first website I looked at was Katy Perry's official website. As you can tell it is, it is bright with pastel colours. Her latest music video has been include on the main page. There is a pink cloud theme at the top of the page. There is a section dedicated to her latest tweets from her Twitter page.
The second website in view was another female American artist, Nicki Minaj. Similarly to Katy Perry, she has a very feminine, brightly coloured website. Also, there is an image at the top of the screen of the artist, like the last website. From looking at these two websites, it is clear that it will be a good to have bright colours used for the background of the website. Also, we should include some social networking updates for the artist.

Here is a graph on where in the charts katy Perry's songs appeared and how long they stayed there for. It shows that 'i kissed a girl' remained at the top of the charts for the longest which shows how popular this song was, which has helped make our decision to pick 'i kissed a girl'. Although, we were going to pick waking up in vegas but this graph helped changed our minds to 'I kissed a girl'.

PLANNING - Music Demographics - Map
This map shows the distribution of Katy Perry's fans across the world. As you can see, the blue dots show that the majority of her fans are in the USA and United Kingdom. This will help us as we now know to make our video appealing to British and American people, as they are the people most likely to be watching the video.

PLANNING - MTV Viewers
In the UK and Ireland MTV is in over 10million homes with a medium average viewing age of 21.6. MTV's target audience consists of mainly18-24year olds and is the top rated network in the 12-24 demographics. This would influence our music video choice as if we wanted our music video to be played on one of MTVs channels then we would have to take into consideration their target audince and their avarage vieweing age.

PLANNING - Demographics: Katy Perry Songs
The graph below shows songs by Katy Perry and how popular each of them were when they were released. As you can see 'I kissed a Girl' has the third longest bar chart which is why we have chosen to do this song. It was very popular when it was released and did well among pop audiences. This has therefore influenced our decision to pick this song.

PLANNING- Music Demographics - Pop (Facebook Promotion)
After conducting research into the genre and artist that we have chosen, I found that Katy Perry has the most number of fans on Facebook with over 34000000. This is valuable information as it shows Facebook is the largest promotional tool currently on the internet. We believe this is due to the fact that people can access all the other social networks via Facebook, such as Twitter, MySpace & Youtube. Therefore, Facebook is the best place for us to promote our music video.

PLANNING - Music Demographics- Pop Genre
Here we have a pie chart which shows different genres in terms of its popularity. It shows that pop is the most popular Genre which has influenced our groups choce on what song we are going to do for our music video. Seeing as pop is the most popular we have decideed to pick a Katy perry song called 'I kissed a girl' as most of her songs are pop and this way we know we will have a large target audience and a big fan base. We was going to pick a pop/rock song but seeing as it is not as popular we thought it would be smart to change to the most popular genre in order to cater to the target audeince in order to get positive feedback from them.

PLANNING- Analysis Of a controversial Music Video
Britney Spears: Everytime
'Everytime' portrays Britney Spears as a celebrity, constantly hounded by paparazzi, she then goes on to drown in her bath tub when she starts bleeding from a wound in her head. The oroginial concept of the music video was that Britney had killed herself by taking an over dose on prescription drugs, then drowned in her bath tub. however this concept was criticised by many organisations in the U.K. and the uNited states as the ending ws perceived as a glamorisation of suicide. This is one of the main reasons why the music video caused alot of controversy. The lyrics of the song are a plea for forgiveness for inadvertently hurting a former lover and the video was said to be a response to Justin Timberlake's 'Cry me a river'. This video also caused controversy when it was released for a number of different reasons:
Below is a shot of Britney in her bath tub, just before she relies she is bleeding from her head. We can see she is wearing a bracelet associated with Kabbalah but it can also be interpreted as 'self harm' because the bracelet is red and looks as though she has slit her wrist. Something like this would have been viewed as controversial because these type of images are not usually shown in a music video due to the sensitivity of the subject. Also, this may reflect Britney's own personal life, suggesting she has considered harming herself.
The shot shows Britney with blood on her hand from her head. According to Jennifer Vineyard of MTV, the blood in her hand is stigmata: bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus, such as the hands and feet. This image would have caused controversy due to the religious link used, especially as its use could be interpreted in different ways. For e.g. to some members of the audience it may look like she is mocking religion.
This shot here was very controversial because Britney is drowning in her bath tub after losing consciousness from the wound in her head. Which could be a sign that fame is killing her seeing as her injury was the result of a paparazzi hitting her in the head with a camera.

In the shot below Britney is being harassed by paparazzi and fans where a fight then breaks out. This scene in the music video has been compared to the fight scene with the Jews in 'The Passion of Christ'. There are various religious references which have been interpreted in the video, this being one of them.
Below is a shot of Britney in her bath tub, just before she relies she is bleeding from her head. Also, this may reflect Britney's own personal life, suggesting she has considered harming herself.
In the shot below is an example of a common motif within music videos. This is called intertextuality where the artist relies themselves as Art and knows they are in a music video. It appears she does not like what she sees because of the way she looks at herself.

The scene below is shown after Britney drowning in her bathtub which suggests she is dead because it is as if she running towards 'the light'. It also shows another common motif: slow motion. Britney is running in slow motion through a hospital hallway and this effect is used to break up concepts of reality and emphasise the shot.
